Context
The cemetery was established during the First World War beside the Milovice prisoner-of-war camp. Italian servicemen who died far from home, especially in the final months of the conflict, were buried here.
Milovice was already a large Austro-Hungarian training ground when it became a prisoner camp in 1914. The following year the cemetery was organised beside the barracks, first with individual graves and later with common graves as deaths from hunger and disease increased.
The crosses, monument and nominal archive give this history a human scale. The cemetery is both an Italian place and a European memory.

Origins and landscape
The cemetery's story begins before the crosses. In 1904 Milovice became a training area; in 1914 the military system was converted into a prisoner-of-war camp for thousands of men.
Historical postcards and photographs show the barracks, roads and training grounds that shaped prisoners' lives.

Essential chronology
1914
With the outbreak of the First World War, Milovice becomes part of the Austro-Hungarian military network. The camp and its infrastructure take on a new strategic role.
