How we read the records

  1. Partial dates

A date such as 1895-00-00 is published with the available year only; undocumented components are not reconstructed.

  2. Alternative spellings

Alternative spellings of surnames and places are kept separately from the primary value and included in nominal search.

  3. Uncertainty markers

Question marks and formula errors are not treated as certain data; they are returned as undetermined information.

  4. Grave references

Grave references are preserved in their original archival form, including abbreviations, ranges and notes.

  5. Photographs

The drawing used in records is evocative only. A photograph is associated with a person only after documentary verification.
